Collection of Cell Phone Usage Surveys

February 28, 2006

I love cell phones, but for the most part, I dislike cell phone users. Some of these results will make you cringe, and some will make you laugh. Here are a few excerpts:

  • “83 percent of respondents said cell phones have made life easier, besting the Internet in second place at 76 percent”
  • “15 percent of Americans have interrupted sex to answer a cell phone call”
  • “7 percent said they used their backlights to cheer on their favorite band at a concert, replacing the trusty lighter of the past. And 4 percent have used it to light up their face to tell a ghost story.”
  • “38 percent said it was fine to use the cell phone in the bathroom.” ???? And that’s *down* from 62 percent in 2003

Interesting stuff. Read the full article, SFGate.com

Sony-Ericsson W950: First Symbian Walkman Phone

February 28, 2006

A new Symbian-based Walkman phone was
announced — it’s expected to be available in Q32006 in EMEA and
Asia-Pacific, and it is to-die-for beautiful. I love Sony-Ericsson phones, both as a consumer and as a developer, but I don’t have any firsthand experience with these Walkman phones.

I have a Sony-Ericsson s710a. For most people, this phone is nowhere close to mobile enough. It is hefty in my pocket, but the gorgeous screen more than makes up for it. I don’t use cell phones to talk — I use them for mobile data access — so most normal ergonomic standards mean nothing to me anyway.

Gorgeous Google Photo Essay

February 27, 2006

I love this photo essay
Time did on life at Google. Makes your mouth water, no? And I’m a big
Google fan – or at least was, at one point. I find my support wavering
of late.

It can’t be easy juggling the demands of two masters, nor is it
sustainable for any length of time. You have this work life utopia on
one hand, and now you have John Q. Public’s investment interests on the
other. As shortsighted as it might be, public companies have a primary
obligation to increase shareholder value, at nearly all costs.
Although Google’s CEO was quoted as saying “The company isn’t run for the long-term value of our shareholders but for the long-term value of our end users.” Eeek, wise move, that one. Something’s got to give, and it almost certainly will be some of the
culture and amenities enjoyed by the good folks at the Googleplex. Not
in one fell swoop, but bit by bit, a little snip here, a little
concession there.

Best. Music Video. Ever.

February 25, 2006

apache1.jpg apache2.gifAn oldie resurfaces. I was cleaning up some clutter, and ran across this video. I’m sure I’ll tire of it eventually, but not today. It is laugh out loud funny. Not that I’m trying to scare you away or anything, you understand, but it might haunt your memories for a few days to come. Check it out

New Blog, Not New to Blogging

February 25, 2006

"Yay, yet another blog." Not to worry, I’m saving CPU cycles here. In a slight breach of blogging etiquette, it is unlikely that this blog will be tightly focused.

I’m cleaning house and aggregating blogs a bit here, so posts will cover a relatively wide spectrum, but the primary focus will be on programming, mobile applications and development, and interesting news items.
